Apart, We Are Together

I think we spend a lot of our lives escaping from our bodies. We try to hide from each other that we are getting older and we are ashamed of the sounds that the body makes. Apart, We Are Together is about bringing each other back to that place.

In the spring of 2018, I attended a percussion concert. The concert started very softly. Soft enough to hear simmering and squeaky ads from the hundreds of public bodies. It had something magical about it. It could have been a concert in itself. Everyone seemed to belong to one large organism and the boundary between inside and outside the body seemed to blur.

As an artist and dancer, I view the body as space, in which each of us lives in our own way. What we have in common is that we all have a body. And I believe this connects us. In response to the complex global shifts that point to increasing polarities between people, I wonder how we meet each other again. Digital technologies have strongly influenced our way of being together, I want to dedicate myself in my work to new forms of physical togetherness.

Inspired by the percussion concert, I will investigate space in our bodies as a place to be and from there enter into new forms of contact with each other and the environment. The project consists of several subprojects of workshops, live performances, a website, drawings, film and a closing conference at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
